CORRUGATED IRON

Corrugated Iron isn’t just a youth arts company. It provides the first sparks of creativity and invests in young and emerging artists. The organisation is most known for its drama and workshop program, and annual performances. But there are many ways to connect with Corrugated Iron even if you’re over 30 and don’t think of yourself as an artist. If you’re seeking professional learning in the arts or want to join a vibrant community organisation as a board member or volunteer, come and talk with us.

Corrugated Iron’s breadth of community activities includes an extensive schools and community program across the NT delivering professional learning for educators and sport & recreation officers. Corrugated Iron also sends teams of community engagement workers into the field to work with young people. The arts draw participants in and teach crucial skills like encouraging and listening.

For adults who want to explore or reconnect with the performing arts, Corrugated Iron has 18>30, a self-managed ensemble for theatre makers. They meet on Wednesday nights to encourage their development as emerging artists. Participant and Corrugated Iron Tutor, Thomas Midena, loves attending, “It’s a great opportunity for young adults to learn acting skills, play drama games and develop shows, with regular opportunities to perform along the way. The group adapts to the aspirations of the participants and anyone is encouraged to bring along their own scripts, ideas, or goals.”

The adult aerial circus class is also an excellent program that currently runs on Thursday nights. Nikki Jeffries, the Circus Program Manager, is passionate about her work, “It’s another way of getting fit and working muscles you never even knew you had. We help people get out of their comfort zone and reach new heights. We have a wide range of ages and all skill levels, anyone is welcome to join us.”

If you prefer being behind the scenes, volunteer and get involved. We have a board of management with an array of arts lovers. You can gain on-the-job training and experience through production work, and we always love people to help out with costumes and show creation. Lily Whiteaker began her journey with us just last year, “I came across an advertisement for Bamboo Moon on Facebook. Since then I haven’t looked back! I take part in circus open training, 18>30 Acting and I tutor a drama class. It is so much fun!”

Corrugated Iron provides opportunities for everyone: young, young-at-heart, artistic and enthusiastic. Come and be a part of Darwin’s booming art culture, meet new people, and have some fun.

Hannah Barrows recently finished her creative arts and industries degree in communication at Charles Darwin University and is now working for Corrugated Iron Youth Arts as the Marketing Coordinator.
