ABOUT US

Flycatcher is the free, student-led magazine at Charles Darwin University (CDU).

"Flycatcher" was the nickname given to Charles Darwin by the crew of the Beagle due to his collection of specimens that littered the ship. First Lieutenant Wickham affectionately called him “that damned flycatcher” as he dealt with the chaos the collection created. We hope that in borrowing Charlie’s nickname, we can be the ship littered with collections of the words, ideas, thoughts and experiences of CDU students and the Northern Territory community.

The first edition of Flycatcher was published in April 2016. We have published (Top End) seasonally during the university semester ever since - with a Wet, Dry, and Build-Up Season edition. Currently, Flycatcher is run by a small team of student editors, an illustrator, and a graphic designer, as well as a community editor, and student scout (based in Alice Springs).

Flycatcher magazine hard-copies are distributed around Northern Territory campuses and are freely available to all students, staff and visitors. A small number are distributed throughout businesses in the Darwin area. As CDU has a large external cohort, all editions of Flycatcher are available online as digital flip-books.

We aim to promote the voices and talents of CDU students across all cohorts - internal, external, international; school-leavers and mature age; HE and VET - irrespective of age, course, or interests. While we prioritise student content, we also accept content from CDU staff, and Northern Territory community members.

Flycatcher features and welcomes the following content:

  • Feature stories of current interest to students and the world;

  • News stories and event information relevant to Charles Darwin University students and NT communities;

  • Creative writing, essays, poetry, artwork and photography;

  • Contributions to regular sections like Mayse's Corner, Dating Doctor, and The Flycatcher Quiz, or suggestions or expressions of interest for other regular features or writing as a columnist.

Flycatcher does not condone the publishing of racist, sexist, militaristic or queerphobic material. The views expressed here do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors or Charles Darwin University Student Association (CDUSA) or Charles Darwin University (CDU).
